Responsibilities:

  1. Animal Care and Husbandry:
    • Provide daily care to the sheep herd, including feeding, watering, and monitoring their health and well-being.
    • Assist with lambing and ensure the proper care of newborn lambs.
    • Administer vaccinations, medications, and treatments as directed by the farm manager or veterinarian.
    • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions in the barns and pastures to promote animal health and prevent the spread of disease.
    • Monitor and control pests and predators that may pose a threat to the flock.
  2. Flock Management:
    • Assist with breeding programs, including heat detection, artificial insemination, and ram selection.
    • Perform regular health checks, identify signs of illness or injury, and promptly report any concerns to the farm manager.
    • Assist in the maintenance of accurate records for the flock, including breeding, lambing, and health records.
    • Monitor and manage grazing rotations to ensure optimal pasture utilization and prevent overgrazing.
  3. Facilities and Equipment:
    • Help maintain farm infrastructure, including fences, gates, barns, and equipment, to ensure a safe and functional working environment.
    • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment, such as tractors, feeding systems, and shearing equipment.
    • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment to ensure their proper functioning.
  4. General Farm Tasks:
    • Assist with general farm duties, such as mucking out stalls, cleaning equipment, and performing routine farm maintenance.
    • Support harvest and storage activities, such as haymaking and silage production.
    • Follow all safety protocols and adhere to biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working on a sheep farm or with livestock is highly preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of sheep husbandry practices, including breeding, lambing, and health care.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate farm machinery is an asset.
